About Sara

Sara Shupe MSPT, Dip. MDT, Physical Therapist Specialist, Founder and President of J.O.Y. Physical Therapy

Sara has been practicing physical therapy in mainly outpatient orthopedic setting since graduating from the University of MN in 2002. She is married to Carl and has three children: Elijah, Eva, & Jude. She enjoys mission work in Central and South America through One World Surgery and Mechanical Care Everywhere- helping to bring musculoskeletal care services to remote areas where she can practice her Spanish and share the love of Jesus! She also loves to spend time taking her Dox-mix puppy, Chase, for hikes, scrapbooking, studying the Bible at church group, and having home dinners with friends and family.

Sara achieved her Diploma in Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (Dip. MDT) from the McKenzie Institute International of New Zealand in 2008. This specialty has been designated in 450 therapists around the world and involves years of extensive post-graduate training and residency in the identification of mechanical pain patterns as it relates to patients’ movements, positions, and/or activities. This evaluation system has been studied in most musculoskeletal disorders for over 40 years and has found to be one of the most reliable, valid, and efficient algorithms for physical therapy treatment today.  Sara has used MDT to lead programs such as The Walk In Spine Clinic with same day spine treatment, win The HealthPartners Innovation Award, be a part of MDT Outcomes WorkForce, develop and implement many quality mentorship programs, write back pain blogs and FaceBook commercials for back pain, and be invited to present at NASS, NASF and MDT Conference of the Americas! She is currently working on writing an article for an online spine journal on the benefits of early MDT for back pain!

I utilize MDT to determine which position/posture correction, mechanical, manual and/or exercise treatment your body requires to successfully reach your functional goals, regardless of your age or type, from the athlete to the reader! I am excited to meet you! - Sara
